The Big Wild

Canada is known around the world for its natural beauty.  Our vast forests, clean rivers, and rugged landscapes have provided inspiration for artists and explorers for generations.  Canada’s wilderness is a part of our identity.

Currently, only 10% of Canada’s wild areas are protected from human development.  Scientists have declared, and we agree, that to ensure that Canada’s wilderness survives for the generations to come, we need to protect much more.  The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society and Mountain Equipment Co-op have teamed up in a movement we are calling The Big Wild.  The goal of The Big Wild is keeping at least half of Canada’s public land and water permanently wild.  To accomplish this goal, we need lots of people to pull together.

How you can help

Learn: Visit our website at thebigwild.org .  You will find links to the various campaigns that CPAWS is running across the country.  You can become a Big Wild supporter by registering.  You can also share stories, photos and videos of your experiences in Canada’s wild areas.

Donate: Through the website, you may also donate to the Big Wild Fund.  This fund will be used to support wilderness conservation projects across the country.

Act: The more adventurous may decide to take on The Big Wild Challenge.  People taking the challenge will be invited to dedicate their next outdoor adventure to help protect Canada’s big, wild places.   The challenge consists of an excursion lasting at least overnight in the wild.  Challengers will collect donations for The Big Wild, and they can post the results of their experience on the website.  The challenge this year runs from Victoria Day to Labour Day (May 19 to September 1),  and prizes will be awarded for The Big Wild Challenges of the Year.  Full details of the challenge are available on thebigwild.org.
