Jacquet River Gorge Protected Area

Location: southwest of Bathurst

Size: Covers 26,026 hectares (18,429 ha is fully protected now, and forest harvesting in the remaining 7,597 ha will be phased out by the year 2012)

Description:  The deep gorge created by the Jacquet River and its southern branch dominates this wilderness area, a scenic mix of spruce/fir, pine, hardwood and cedar forests, gulches, streams and waterfalls. The area has high recreation potential for canoeing along the main Jacquet River, and for hiking and snowshoeing in the gulches west of Antinouri Lake. Antinouri Lake is a good place for canoeing and trout fishing.
Significant ecological features of the protected area include some of the largest freshwater wetlands in northeastern New Brunswick, excellent salmon nursery habitat in the Jacquet River System, and old-growth forests along the steep ravines.

Notes:

  • elevation ranges from 40m to 340m

  • Many of the gulches down the Jacquet River had logging camps in the early 1900's.  Remnants of some can still be found just outside the protected area.

  • During World War II, Antinouri Lake was a wilderness survival training base camp for a group of American soldiers.
