Mount Carleton Park Extension Protected Area

Location: east of Saint Quentin, adjacent to Mount Carleton Provincial Park

Size: 11,895 ha

Description:  The Mount Carleton Extension is located east of Mount Carleton Provincial Wilderness Park, protecting more of the rugged, mountainous terrain of the Missionary Mountains and a significant portion of the headwaters of the Nepisiguit River (a major salmon river and habitat for a unique gene pool of brook trout). The Nepisiguit River is considered by many canoeists to be the jewel of New Brunswick wild river routes, winding through mountain ranges, slower marsh areas, remote mountain streams with clear, rocky bottoms, and past waterfalls.

Notes:

  • elevation ranges from 250m to 710m on Mount Walker

  • 2 Class 1 protected areas (Freeze Lakes and Mount Elizabeth) lie just to the south of this site
