Protecting the Restigouche Wilderness

¨       The Restigouche is one of Eastern Canada’s most spectacular wild watersheds, spreading over 1 million hectares of northern New Brunswick and Quebec’s Gaspé

¨       It shelters wild Atlantic salmon, moose, black bear, marten and abundant forest and coastal birds

¨       Its natural areas allow Canada lynx populations to move for shelter and food across the wide landscape between the Gaspé and northern Maine

Why Does it Need Protection?

¨       Only half a percent of the New Brunswick part of the watershed is protected from industrial development

¨       ¾ of the watershed in NB is public Crown land, licensed to large forestry companies - current logging plans show most Restigouche roadless areas will be clear-cut over next ten years.

What is CPAWS New Brunswick Doing?

¨       CPAWS’ goal - to achieve new protected areas on public land and conserve old forests and wild river habitats

¨       We’re working with communities and visitors to mobilize a large public constituency that cares about the Restigouche and will take action to see it protected

Take Action!

¨       Write to Premier Shawn Graham, telling him it is important to protect Restigouche’s wilderness and wildlife.  If you’ve been there, tell him what makes it special.  If you would like to visit, tell him how important it is to visitors that New Brunswick’s wilderness areas be protected.  Premier Shawn Graham, P.O. Box 6000, Fredericton, NB  E3B 5H1 (premier@gnb.ca)

¨       Take your Big Wild Challenge on the Restigouche. You’ll have a great adventure on a world-renowned canoeing and salmon angling river, or hiking the International Appalachian Trail, and raise the profile of this Great Wild Space across Canada!  For information, click here.

¨       Become a member of Friends of Restigouche, and help encourage government to act.  To do this, follow this link.
